It is very, very important to have a breathable ridge system on every roof, especially older properties that have damp issues. Mainly in the winter when it's cold outside and the heating is on, damp houses condensate. The warm air in the house rises, carrying moisture up towards your loft.
Heat always rises to the highest point, which happens to be the ridge on top of your roof. If your ridge isn't breathable, this moist air can’t escape. In this situation, the warm, moist air condensates on your felt and timbers. It then runs down the felt and into your walls, continuing this damp cycle.
Breathable felt does not let water molecules through it, only air. When a roofer installs new felt on a roof, they take the felt on the front over the top of the ridge to the other side and the same with the back. You end up with double felt over the ridge. Then they install an off-the-shelf ridge kit with ridge tiles that only cover about two inches on the front and rear tiles, which is not enough. Original ridge tiles are old-fashioned and only keep the weather out when they are cemented on.
This means none of the above will breathe, instead keeping moist air trapped in, continuing the damp cycle.
