LEARN MOREChimneys are a main contributor to damp walls and ceilings in a property because, more often than not, chimneys are no longer in use, so deteriorate very quickly. Many people never assume that damp inside their property could come from a leaking chimney. In most cases, if you notice damp in or near your chimney breast walls, you definitely have a failing chimney.
Chimneys are usually made of four components:
These materials expand and contract at different rates. When this happens, you get small cracks in the cement around chimney pots and every time it rains, water runs into these cracks and into the chimney breast. Ice forms in the winter when the weather is wet and the water freezes within the chimney, breaking the chimney apart and washing the mortar out of the brick joints.
To stop leaking, most builders offer chimney repointing, new lead soakers around the chimney or caps on top of chimney pots. However, we have found over the years that these remedies do not work. Unless you take the situation seriously, you will always be revisiting this problem. That's why we have come up with our own solution to stop chimneys leaking.
If you wish to use the chimney and/or want to keep the original look of your property, our advice is to rebuild the chimney. Our solutions will ensure your chimney, chimney breast and adjoining walls stay dry and dry out much quicker.
Our main solution is to reduce the height of the chimney by getting rid of all the coining bricks around the top, which are bad weathering points. We then install a concrete slab at the top of the chimney and bead and render all sides of the chimney. We then install a coping cover-style cap and spinning cowl on the top, making the chimney watertight and breathable. The spinning cowl on the top of the chimney cover constantly draws damp air out of the stack and walls for free. The chimney ends up looking really smart and stops any more water causing dampness in your property.
